What is KNX? What is Smart Home? How can you help me?

KNX is a simple system for intelligent electrical installation networking. A KNX bus cable combines devices and systems and new functions can be easily added in the future as the needs of occupants change and extra functionality is required.

KNX products are used to build intelligent integrated building control solutions for domestic and commercial applications.

As a result, owners, residents, or managers of these properties have control over the everyday working or living environment. This can cover all building services such as

  • heating,
  • ventilation,
  • air conditioning,
  • lighting,
  • security and
  • metering as well as the
  • operation of
    • blinds,
    • electrical appliances,
    • windows,
    • facades,
    • AV/sound systems and
    • many other functions.

As the world’s only open standard for intelligent buildings (ISO/IEC 14543-3), KNX has been around for nearly thirty years and now offers an array of over 7,000 KNX Association-approved products manufactured by over 400 suppliers.

This means that we can tailor an installation to meet the needs of the building and the end-user, who is never tied to a single proprietary system.

Combining complex technology with an easy-to-operate user interface, KNX installations offer simple visualisation, monitoring and control, creating properties that are both comfortable and energy efficient. Indeed, research carried out by the University of Bremen has demonstrated that a KNX building management system can provide energy savings of 40% with shading control, 50% with individual room control, and 60% with lighting and ventilation control.

KNX TECH?

What we bring to help you and your Clients

KNX is the worldwide open standard for commercial and domestic building automation. KNX devices can manage lighting, blinds and shutters, HVAC, security systems, energy management, audio video, white goods, displays, remote control, etc.

Therefore anyone trained and experienced, can support the building and they are not dependent on any one manufacturer in the event of a failure of one component.

As Ireland’s only dedicated KNX distributor, we represent some of the leading brands in KNX such as Dinuy, Ekinex, GIRA, Elsner, eElectronic, Eisner Electronik, Lingg & Janke and more.

We specialise in Domestic Smart Homes and provide a service to M&E designers, Architects, electrical contractors and you, the Smart Home Owner:

  • Consult,
  • design,
  • Spec,
  • Programme,
  • Fit,
  • Commission.
  • Support a KNX installation.
We can also train their staff so that they become and Authorised KNX Partner.

You provide the First fix drawings. We provide the estimated design.  No extra training is needed by the contractor or designer.  We programme interfacing devices in advance during the first fix and finalise the programming during the second fit, then we follow up when the facility is in use to make sure it is practical.

KNX means a faster to fit installation, even though there will be more cables: because we are controlling everything centrally, more cables are pulled together and, once in, the first fit is practically complete.

Niall Walsh is President KNX Association in Ireland, Ireland’s only Certified KNX Tutor and runs Ireland’s only Authorised KNX training centre.
